Sturgis 2013: Another One for the Record Books

Sturgis 2013: Another One for the Record Books

  • The 73rd Sturgis Motorcycle Rally in the Black Hills of South Dakota has come and gone, once again living up to its billing as the biggest biker rally in the country. Some campers showed up almost two weeks before the rally began, and although crowds were expected to be slightly down this year, estimates put the attendance figure north of a half million people.

We could go on and on about how awesome the bikes, concerts, motorcycle products, tattoos and people watching were, but we thought we’d share a few somewhat random tidbits from Sturgis that you might find interesting.

    • Kid Rock delivered what most called the best concert of the event, performing a good portion of the show in a driving rainstorm. CMT had the nerve to ask him to tone down his act because they were filming. Kid Rock responded with a middle finger.

    • Indian Motorcycle, America’s first motorcycle brand, unveiled its 2014 lineup. Now owned by the Polaris sports company, Indian definitely turned heads as they attempt to challenge Harley Davidson for motorcycle supremacy.

    • About 50 couples were signed up to exchange “I do’s” at the Hitchin’ Post. We’d love to get our hands on those wedding photos.

    • Bikes, tattoos and concerts get so much of the attention, but there’s actually a thriving art scene at Sturgis. More than custom motorcycles, there were dozens of paintings, photos and sculptures on display, headlined by Michael Lichter’s “Motorcycles as Art” show.

    • The Sturgis Police Department hired extra officers from nine states within a 10-hour drive of the rally. Let’s see how that worked out…

    • The Sturgis Motorcycle Rally police blotter: 69 accidents during the rally, up from 50 last year. Six deaths from crashes, down from nine last year. 255 drunken driving arrests, virtually unchanged from last year’s total of 251. 275 misdemeanor and felony drug arrests, up from 219 last year. If only people could just go have a good time without acting stupid.

    • Daredevil Clint Ewing attempted to break the Guinness World Record for riding a motorcycle through the Tunnel of Fire. The tunnel was made of chicken wire and cardboard and stretched longer than a football field. Storms messed with the timing, and the burning cardboard was disintegrating at the time of the stunt. Ewing ended up crashing through the side of the tunnel, suffered serious burns and was lucky to survive. Look for footage on CMT.

    • Continuing the daredevil theme, the Rapid City Journal reported that Robbie Knievel, son of the legendary Evel, was arrested for DUI after hitting a couple of motorhomes with his RV. If he was anything like his dad, wouldn’t he just jump over them?
