Here is a recent question that we received through Live Chat: “We just bought a horse. Should we get a bumper-pull or gooseneck trailer?”

Well, several factors must be taken into consideration before you choose a trailer.

Are you planning to transport one horse? If that’s the case, a small, one-horse bumper-pull trailer will generally work just fine and shouldn’t require significant upgrades to your truck.

If you plan to buy more than one horse, travel to horse shows and other events, and pull more weight, you should consider a gooseneck. When you place the weight over the rear axle of your truck, you have more control, turning while towing becomes easier, and you can haul heavier loads.

Of course, you also need to know your truck’s tow rating and understand the language of towing before you connect a trailer to any truck, especially if you’re a beginner. This will help keep yourself, your horse and other drivers safe.
